Local Spotlight |
Hastings Family Service
301 Second St. E.
Hastings Family Service started in the late 1960s, when the local schools asked Dawn Sheridan for help with children who were coming to school without proper clothing and coats. She and her friend Mary Jean Engstrom began collecting clothes and handing them out from her basement. With Chamber director Virginia McHale and attorney Lew Linde, they incorporated it as the Clothes Closet on April 21, 1970.
Today it runs The Market food shelf, Meals on Wheels with Allina Health Regina Hospital, Just Friends rides to medical appointments, back-to-school supplies and Project Share at the holidays. Its thrift store, Rivertown Treasures, is open to the public, and all of its profits go to those programs. HFS says a $10 donation turns into 70 pounds of food.
It turns up three times in this issue: Wednesday’s resource drop-in, the food collection at Sunday’s Candy Crawl, and Gobble Gait below.
