No school for ISD 200 on Friday, a teacher workshop day, and the city has a Glow Skate at the Civic Arena that morning to fill it. The Fire Department opens its doors Tuesday evening, Thursday has a home football game and AAUW’s Oktoberfest, and the weekend belongs to apples: Carpenter Nature Center’s free Apple Festival runs Saturday and Sunday, with Whistling Well and Afton Apple open too. Sunday afternoon is the last Historic Hastings Car Show of the year. Here is the week. |

- Friday, October 16. Storytime with a Firefighter at Pleasant Hill Library, 10 to 11 a.m., with a fire truck to look over afterward, and a Falcon Encounter at 2 p.m. with a live peregrine falcon. Both free, no registration.
- Sunday, October 18. A 5K fun run from Spiral Brewery, starting at 11 a.m., part of the Minnesota Brewery Running Series. Registration required.
- Friday, October 23. Public bird banding at Carpenter Nature Center, 8:30 a.m. to noon. Free, come and go.
- Sunday, October 25. Trunk or Treat on Sibley Street, 2 to 5 p.m. Hastings Family Service lists a non-perishable food collection at the downtown Halloween Candy Crawl the same afternoon.
- Friday, October 30. The Community Halloween Party, 6 to 8 p.m. at Hastings High School: 30-plus activity stations, a DJ, games and candy from local businesses and school teams. For families with kids 12 and under; admission is a non-perishable food item for Hastings Family Service or a donation to the Youth Impact Council scholarship.

Hastings Farm Market
Westview Mall parking lot
The Farm Market runs through the end of October: Tuesdays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., just off Highway 55 and Pleasant Drive, across from the Speedway.
Vendors bring locally grown produce, flowers, jams and jellies, herbs, honey, soap, salsa and some crafts. Not every vendor is there both days. The day’s list goes up on the market’s Facebook page around opening time.
It is open in almost all weather and closes when the forecast is bad.

- Tuesday, October 13 is the last day to pre-register to vote for the November 3 election, online or by mail. After that, Minnesota lets you register at your polling place on Election Day with proof of residence.
